What are my mobility goals? Understanding your desired level of activity and independence can heavily influence the choice.
How do I emotionally feel about limb loss versus ongoing procedures? This delves into the psychological and emotional impact, which can be significant for either choice.
Have I received a second opinion from both a reconstructive surgeon and a surgeon who collaborates with a high-quality prosthetic company? A multidisciplinary approach and diverse perspectives are vital for an informed decision.
What kind of Insurance Benefits do I have, and is DME (Durable Medical Equipment/Prosthetics) covered and up to what point? Financial considerations, especially concerning long-term prosthetic costs and insurance coverage, are a critical part of the planning.
In the end, what are my priorities for my health, and which option best supports those priorities? Ultimately, the decision must align with your personal goals and medical reality.

What Are Orthotics?

Orthotics are custom-designed medical devices that support, align, or enhance the function of existing body parts—most often the limbs or spine. These devices are worn externally and can play a crucial role in improving balance, alleviating pain, and preventing further injury.

Common Types of Orthotic Devices:

Foot orthotics (shoe inserts): Help with arch support, heel pain, and gait correction.
Ankle-Foot Orthoses (AFOs): Stabilize the ankle and foot, commonly used for stroke recovery, drop foot, and cerebral palsy.
Supramalleolar Orthoses (SMOs): These are shorter than AFOs and wrap around just above the ankle bones (malleoli). They’re often used in children with low muscle tone or mild instability to help correct pronation and support better balance while walking.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, nearly 2 million Americans use orthotics , and the Amputee Coalition estimates 2.1 million use prosthetics. With over 4 million people in the U.S. living with limb loss or limb difference, finding the right prosthetic and orthotic (O&P) clinic can make a significant difference in your care—and your life.

At Alliance Prosthetics and Orthotics , we believe that choosing a clinic starts with asking one key question:

"How do I want to feel at the end of each appointment?"

While factors like insurance coverage, location, and transportation are important, the emotional and relational experience you have with your clinic staff can be just as vital. Here are four priorities to help guide your decision:

1. Do You Understand the Process?

A great clinic should communicate clearly. When you speak with your clinician or front office team, do you know what the next steps are?
