Carlos walks on two prosthetic legs today, but he didn't wait for them to get moving: before his right prosthesis was even ready, he drove himself to his appointment at Alliance, using hand controls in his car. On October 27th, 2026, right after he sat down to share his story with us, he stood up and walked on both of his prostheses. We've been cheering for our 2023/24 Goal Digger of the Year since 2023, and he keeps giving us more to cheer about.

Behind the Wheel

After his second amputation, getting anywhere meant waiting on someone else for a ride.

So Carlos had hand controls put in his car. He steers, speeds up, and brakes with his hands, and he drove himself to his appointment with our team before his right prosthesis was even ready!

For most people, that drive is just one more errand. For Carlos, it was a first step toward something much bigger.

Twice Over

Carlos lost his left leg below the knee in 2023. He took that first amputation in stride, kept working with our team, and went on to be named our Goal Digger of the Year for 2023/24.

Then, in July 2026, his right leg was amputated below the knee. About 15 days later, it had to be revised, this time above the knee.

The pain was hard. Losing his other leg was harder.

"The first time, I was okay," Carlos said. "The second time, it was a trauma, twice over."

Carlos has worked with Victoria Wilson, LCPO, our Clinical Lead, at our Gainesville clinic since his first amputation. Alliance worked together with Good News Clinics in Gainesville to help Carlos receive his first-ever prosthesis for his left leg. A fund has been established to help provide a one-time prosthetic device, therapy, and care with Alliance. This fund is through a collaboration between Össur, Alliance, Brenau, and Good News Clinics.

When we asked about his time at Alliance, he didn't start with legs or fittings. He started with people.

"Everyone has treated me very well, from the front door to Victoria," Carlos said. "They are always smiling, and that has helped me a lot."

On the hard days, he told us, that warmth helped him stay in the right frame of mind.

Starting Over, Together

After the second amputation, Carlos and Victoria started a new chapter: fitting a prosthesis for his right leg, above the knee this time, with the goal of walking on two prostheses.

Through all of it, Carlos held on to his independence. He still keeps up his own yard. He sets something on the ground to help him transfer from his wheelchair onto his zero-turn mower, then drives it with his hands.

What kept him going was a choice about how he looks at all of it.

"I think about the fact that I'm alive, that I have to keep moving forward," Carlos said

October 27th, 2026

When we sat down with Carlos on October 27th, 2026, we asked what he was working toward. His answer was simple.

"First of all, I want to walk again," he said.

Right after that interview, he did. With both of his prostheses on, Carlos walked. Goal achieved!

Words for Someone Just Starting

We asked Carlos what he would tell someone facing amputation. He answered right away, and when we asked if there was anything else he wanted to share, he came back to the same idea.

"Be very patient. Everything has a solution. The only thing without a solution is death. There are prostheses, there is help. We are not alone."

"It is very hard," he added. "But at Alliance, you just have to knock on the door, and there is help."

Or, in his own words: "Tengan mucha paciencia. Todo esto tiene solución."

What's Next for Carlos

Now that he's walking, Carlos has his next goal in sight: getting back to work and having something to do every day.

He knows the road is hard. He's just not planning to stop.

"This is not going to stop me at all," Carlos said.

Walking on October 27th, 2026 checked one big goal off Carlos's list, and he's already reaching for the next one: getting back to work and having something to do every day. He set his sights high once and became our 2023/24 Goal Digger of the Year. We have a feeling he's just getting started, and we'll be right here cheering for every goal that comes next.
